Laughlin said.
For his digital music creation
lessons, Laughlin will work with
students to master beat matching
and live editing, song editing and
creating remixes in Ableton Live and
crafting their own style.
“There is tremendous interest in
DJing and creating music digitally.
This art form offers music lovers the
chance to express themselves in a
completely different way than play-
ing traditional instruments,” said
Balbaugh. “We have been looking
for years for the right teacher so we
could offer this as another option for
our students, and Bobby is it!”
Teri Noaeill, artistic director of the
Community Music School, added,
“We are excited to see where Bobby
will take us and look forward to
hearing what his students produce.”
After serving five years in the
Navy, Laughlin earned a Music
Production degree from the Los
Angeles Film School.
Influenced by artists like Skrillex,
his passion for electronic dance
music (EDM) has shaped his style
and teachings, he said.
Laughlin also is proficient in blend-
ing pop music like Taylor Swift,
cultural tunes from Bollywood, clas-
sic rock from bands like The Eagles,
alternative hits by 311, hip hop
featuring artists like Usher and Flo

Rida, and country tracks by artists
such as Morgan Wallen and Carrie
Underwood.

The Battle Creek Regional History
Museum and Misfits Car Club of
Battle Creek will be hosting the 2nd
annual Del Shannon Weekend.
Charles Weedon Westover (aka
Del Shannon), who once lived
and worked in Battle Creek, is
best known for his hit pop songs
“Runaway,” “Hats Off to Larry” and
“Little Town Flirt.”
Del Shannon Weekend runs from
June 28-30 and will feature a concert,
classic car show and a musical legacy
event here in town.
According to Michael Delaware
of the Regional History Museum,
Shannon was born in 1934 in Grand
Rapids, and grew up in nearby
Coopersville.
He was drafted into the Army in
1954, and while in Germany, played
in a band called The Cool Flames.
When Shannon’s service ended, he
made his way to Battle Creek, where
he worked as a carpet salesman and
truck driver.
In the evenings he played rhythm
guitar in singer Doug Demott’s group

at the Hi-Lo Club in town.
When DeMott was fired in 1958,
he took over the band as leader and
singer, originally giving himself the
name Charlie Johnson.
In 1959, he added keyboardist
Max Crook, who played an instru-
ment of his own invention called the
Musitron, which was an early synthe-
sizer.
They were eventually signed by
BigTop Records, and it was after this
that he adopted the stage name of Del
Shannon – a blend of the name of his
favorite car, the Cadillac Coupe de
Ville, and a popular wrestler of the
time, Mark Shannon.
One of the songs the band played
using the Musitron at the Hi-Lo Club
was later recorded in a New York
studio, and the single was released as
“Runaway” on Jan. 21, 1961.
It went to #1 on the Billboard charts
in April 1961.
Shannon followed up this success
with other hits, such as “Hats off to
Larry,” which peaked at #5 that same
year.

Over the years, Shannon would
release such chart-topping hits as
“Handy May,” “Do You Wanna
Dance?”and “Little Town Flirt.”
On Friday, June 28, the Regional
History Museum will host the Del
Shannon Show at Kellogg Arena,
starring James Popenhagen.
The concert begins at 7 p.m., with
the opening act, the 1960s tribute
band Glad All Over.
Tickets are available at
KelloggArena.com/events.
The weekend continues on
Saturday, June 29, from 11 a.m. to 4
p.m., with the Del Shannon Classic
