250 chapter 7 ■ Transpose, ZSphere Rigging, Retopology, and Mesh Extraction

Figure 7.51 The new mesh is transferred into ZBrush using GoZ. Areas of
new topology are unmasked by default.

Topology Tools Advanced Applications

The Topology tools are often applied to dense meshes that are not in an animation-ready state.
This includes Unified Skins created by the ZSketch tools as well as 3D scan data imported into
ZBrush. This could be a scan of an actor or a clay design maquette. Figure 7.52 shows a char-
acter I roughed in as a clay maquette for the Secret Level/Sega game Golden Axe.
This clay maquette was photographed and scanned using a Cyberscanner 3D scan. The
maquette photography was used as the basis of a Photoshop painting (Figure 7.53). The scan
data was retopologized in ZBrush and used as a base to further sculpt into the final product
shown in Figure 7.54.

Building Accessories with Topology Tools

and Mesh Extraction

The Topology tools can be used to rebuild existing ZTools, but they are also useful for gen-
erating entirely new subtools based on your ZBrush sculpts. By turning off the Projection
option, you can build new geometry that sits perfectly against another ZTool.
