Paraphrasing: Transitional devices
Transitional devices are particularly useful paraphrasing tools. When using such a device,
it is important to pay attention to how the particular word functions in a sentence.


  • Acoordinating conjunction joins two independent clauses.
    Computer networks are expensive, but their widespread use is inevitable.

  • Asubordinating conjunction begins a dependent clause (which is not a complete sentence
    in itself ).
    Although computer networks are costly, their widespread use is inevitable.

  • Apreposition takes a noun as an object and cannot stand alone.
    Despite the high cost of computer networks, their widespread use is inevitable.

  • Atransitional adverb is used at the beginning of an independent clause and creates a logical
    connection between ideas.
    Computer networks are expensive; however, their widespread use is inevitable.
    There are three main uses of transitional devices:

  • Cause and efect
    COORDINATING CONJUNCTION so
    SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTION because, since
    PREPOSITION because of, due to, as a result of
    TRANSITIONAL ADVERB therefore, hence, consequently

  • Contrast
    COORDINATING CONJUNCTION but
    SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTION although, even though, while, whereas
    PREPOSITION despite, in spite of
    TRANSITIONAL ADVERB however, nevertheless, nonetheless

  • Adding information
    COORDINATING CONJUNCTION and
    PREPOSITION in addition to, as well as, besides
    TRANSITIONAL ADVERB also, furthermore, moreover, additionally
