neutralization reaction
A reaction in which an acid and a base react in an aqueous solution to produce a salt and water.
noble gas
An element of Group 18 (helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon).
noble gas configuration
Consists of the elemental symbol of the last noble gas prior to that atom, followed by the configuration of the
remaining electrons.
nonelectrolyte
A compound that does not conduct an electric current in either aqueous solution or in the molten state.
nonmetal
Element that is, generally, a poor conductor of heat and electricity.
nonpolar covalent bond
A covalent bond in which the bonding electrons are shared equally between the two atoms.
nonspontaneous reaction
A reaction that does not favor the formation of products at the given set of conditions.
normal boiling point
The temperature at which the vapor pressure of the liquid is equal to standard pressure.
nuclear binding energy
The energy released when a nucleus is formed from its nucleons.
nuclear fission
A process in which a very heavy nucleus (mass >200) splits into smaller nuclei of intermediate mass.
nuclear fusion
A process in which light-mass nuclei combine to form a heavier and more stable nucleus.
nuclear reaction
A reaction that affects the nucleus of an atom.
nucleic acid
A biopolymer of deoxyribonucleotides (DNA) or ribonucleotides (RNA) found in the nuclei of cells.
nucleotide
A molecule that contains a five-carbon sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogen containing base called a
nucleobase.
nucleus
The tiny, dense, central core of the atom that is composed of protons and neutrons.
nuclide
The nucleus of a given isotope of an element; an atom that is identified by the number of protons and neutrons
in its nucleus.
