Explanation

This is the main formula to tonify Spleen-Qi and stop diarrhoea from Spleen and Stomach
deficiency.

  • Ren Shen, Bai Zhu, Fu Ling and Gan Cao form the Si Jun Zi Tang Four Gentlemen
Decoction which tonifies Stomach- and Spleen-Qi.

  • Bian Dou, Shan Yao and Lian Zi tonify the Spleen and Stomach. Bian Dou and Shan
Yao also tonify Spleen-Yin; Lian Zi is also astringent and stops diarrhoea.

  • Sha Ren and Yi Yi Ren resolve Dampness, the former via sweating, the latter via
    urination.

  • Jie Geng is added to carry the formula to the Upper Burner and the Lungs, so that it also
tonifies Lung-Qi. Jie Geng is sometimes described as having the same function as that of
    an oar of a boat.
