MEMBERS
OF THE JURY
Selection jurors for the
34th Juried IAPS Exhibition
included Liz Haywood-
Sullivan, Sally Strand
and Aline Ordman, with
Andrew McDermott serv-
ing as the awards juror.
French artist Liliane
Desmaret chose awards
for the 5th Master Circle
exhibition, which was
selected by jurors Frederick
D. Somers, Terri Ford
and Nancie King Mertz.
“Because the work was
master-level, selecting the
pieces that truly shined
was a difficult task, as each
piece had its own merits,”
Mertz said. “Thankfully,
the three of us were very
like-minded in our decision-
making, leaning toward
works that offered a
unique exploration of the
pastel medium, or work
that pushed the drama
or color.” Speaking on
behalf of the panel, she
added, “We ended our
final three-day jury session
with a sense of pride in
our selections and a great
eagerness to see the show
firsthand. To curate a show
of this quality is quite an
honor, and we are grateful
to IAPS for the opportunity.”
Haywood-Sullivan
also spoke to the honor of
jurying for the 34th Juried
exhibition. “I continue to be
impressed with the breadth
of expression in the pastel
medium, and this show is
no exception,” she said.
“There are strong images
in every category—still
life, abstract, portrait and
landscape. Stylistically, the
range of pastel application
is not only exciting to see,
but also artists continue to
explore new visions. As the
quality of pastel painting
continues to become even
better, it makes getting
accepted into this exhibition
an increasing honor.”

“Crystal is a favorite model and a dear friend. She has patiently and professionally
posed for hundreds of hours in my studio over the years. I’ve had the pleasure of
spending many break times with her, chatting over coffee. This painting honors
Crystal as she is, when she’s not holding a pose and can just be herself.”
