CitythroughSeptember28.
Thejurorsforthisyear’s
show—DeboraStewart,Michael
McGurkandJimmyWright—have
selected 175 ofthebestpaintings.Dr.MarcusB.Burke,thesenior
curatorofpaintings,drawingsand
metalworkattheHispanicMuseum
andLibrary,willbetheawardsjuror.
Lastyear,theexhibitionsawmore
than1,300entriesfrom 16 coun-
tries,andtheSocietyhasrecorded
similarnumbersthisyear.
Alsotobecelebratedattheevent
isthe 2019 HallofFamehonoree,
StanleyMaltzman,a landscapepas-
telist,authorandeducator,whose
daughter,SusanM.Story,isalsoan
acclaimedpastelartist.Maltzman
saysoftheaward:“It’sa greathonor,bigthrillandan
accomplishment
I neverdreamed
possible.”
Maltzmanstum-
bleduponhispath
toartbyaccident,
afterbeingmistak-
enlyplacedintoan
advancedartclass
inhighschoolrather
thantheadvanced
woodshopclasshe
hadintendedto
take.Later,hewould
discoverpastel.

saystheartist,who’s
adamantaboutthe
importanceofmasteringdrawing.
“DuringWWII,whileI wassketch-
ingthehappeningsonboardthe
USSCentaurus,I feltthisgreatfeel-
ingandthought,‘Whata wonderful
waytolive—beinganartistand
recordinglifeandnaturearound
me.’Arthasgivenmea meansof
self-expression,andcommunica-
tionbetweenmyself,natureandthe
viewer.Ithasbeenmycatalystevery
daywhenI openmyeyesandcon-
tinuestogivemea wonderfulfocus
