Megestrol acetate(Ovaban)

Progestin hormone.

Long-term use mayproduce adverse effectsincluding increased risk ofneoplasia and diabetes.

Avoid chronic use. Use forcontrolling behaviorproblems is discouraged.

5 mg tablets.

Dog – proestrus: 2 mg/kgq24h po for 8 days;anestrus: 0.5 mg/kg q24hpo for 30 days; behavior:2–4 mg/kg q24h for 8days (reduce dose formaintenance).Cat – dermatologictherapy or urine spraying:2.5–5 mg/cat q24h po for1 week, then reduce to5 mg once or twice/week;suppress estrus:5 mg/cat/day for 3 days,then 2.5–5 mg once/weekfor 10 weeks.

Meloxicam (Mobic[human drug],Metacam [veterinarydrug])

NSAID of the oxicam class.Meloxicam is relativelyCOX-1 sparing and hashigh COX-1:COX-2 ratio.It has been used in dogsand cats for pain andosteoarthritis.

Adverse effects are GI andinclude vomiting,diarrhea, and ulceration.

In studies in dogs, higherdoses (up to 0.5 mg/kg)were more effective thanlower doses but wereassociated with a higherincidence of GI adverseeffects. Oral suspension isin a palatable flavor,which may be added topet’s food.

7.5 mg tablets(human). Veterinaryforms: 1.5 mg/mLoral suspension,5 mg/mL injection.

Dog: 0.2 mg/kg initialloading dose, then0.1 mg/kg q24h po.Injection: 0.2 mg/kg IV orSC.Cat: single antipyreticdose, 0.3 mg/kg;long-term dose,0.05 mg/kg q48–72h po.Injection: 0.2 mg/kg SC,one time.
