Even in 2017, there are still no openly
gay male players in the AFL – a fact
that doesn’t surprise Adam Goodes.
Having played the game for over 18
years, the former Sydney Swans footballer
understands how difficult coming out in
the sport would be. “Who wants to be the
first person to break down those barriers?”
Goodes asks. “It would take a lot of
courage.” The answer? “The footy field
needs to become an environment where
players can feel comfortable to say ‘this
is who I am’,” says Goodes, 37. “Hopefully,
when we have marriage equality in this
country, it will make it easier for people
to come out in a way that suits their
situation.” Until then, Goodes will
continue to champion gay rights. “I’ll
always be there for my gay family and
friends – I will be by their side until we
give them the same opportunities that
you and I take for granted,” he promises.
