“I’d like to keep you in for observa-
tion” he said.
Myjawdropped.“You’vegottobe
kidding”Iexclaimed.“Didn’tIjust
pass your tests?”
“No. I wouldn’t kid about this. And
yesyoudidpassallthetests.”
Istaredathimdumbfounded.
He would tell me later that even


though I had passed all the tests
there was something in my account
thatsetoffalarmbells.“Youmight
be having what we call a stutter-
ingstroke(progressivestroke)”he
explained. “It happens over sev-
eral hours perhaps even several
days.You’velikelyhadanumberof
mini-strokessincethismorning.If
that’s the case the likelihood of be-
ingstruckbyalargerstrokeisvery
probable.”
Ilookedaroundtheroomtheni-
nallymadeeyecontact.“OK”Isaid.
Westeppedoutoftheexamination
roomandthedoctortalkedtoPat.
Shenoddedasheexplainedhisdiag-
nosis.henhetoldustotakeaseat.
Someonewouldbealongassoonas
they had a free bed.
Patsatbesidemeworkingona
crosswordpuzzlewhileIfussed
andsquirmedinmyseat.Iremem-
bertryingtoindacomfortableway
