Solo ‘class roots’ picks up big supporter
Magic Marine is sponsoring the
National Solo Class Association
in 2018, including its grassroots
drive to look after regular club
sailors, as well as those on the
open circuit.
The Solo ‘class roots’
initiative will include the Magic
Marine Photo Challenge, for
the best Solo image taken, and
Magic Marine Club Member of
the Month, in which one
association member per
month – nominated by their
club for a noteworthy deed or
outstanding performance – will
have their story published on
the class website and area
Facebook pages and receive a
Magic Marine £50 gift voucher.
Class association president
Will Loy said one of the
committee’s more difficult
tasks had always been
“connecting with the club
sailor who may never want to
venture to an NSCA organised
event, whether local open
meeting or national
championship”; hence the
importance of such initiatives
along with the many existing
benefits for members.
George Kingsnorth, UK rep
for Magic Marine, said: “The
owner of Magic Marine, Max
Blom, is a former Solo sailor
and has happy memories of
the class. There is also
recognition of the strength in
this iconic fleet: participation
numbers at the clubs are high,
as they are at key events, and
there are Solos sailed at most
clubs around the country.”

and interactive shoreside activities.
New era for Netley SC
Netley SC has demolished its old clubhouse in
Southampton’s Royal Victoria Country Park
with work due to start on a new building.
The club started life in the 1970s as an Army
Sailing Centre. A buoyant membership and
appeal as a championship venue has seen it
thrive, but the building was well past its
prime. With revenue from membership and
fundraising, combined with tireless efforts to
keep the old club standing, members are now
looking ahead to a challenging but rewarding
new year with a new clubhouse, the work for
which is underway already.
