This pose stretches the outer hips and groin.
Risks and Contraindications
This pose is contraindicated for students with knee pain or sciatica.
Alignment Points


  • Begin in a seated position, bend one knee and align the shin parallel to the
    front of the mat, and  ex the foot.

  • Bend the opposite knee and align the shin directly on top of the bottom shin,
    allowing the top foot to rest directly on top of the bottom knee. Flex the top
    foot.

  • Align the shoulders directly over the sitz bones.

  • Place the hands by the hips and lift the sternum, gazing directly ahead.

  • Sweep the arms overhead and reach the hands forward, folding from the
    crease of the hips.

  • Throughout the pose, lengthen the back of the neck and keep the cervical
    spine aligned with the rest of the spine.

  • Keep the sitz bones  rmly rooted to the  oor and relax the shoulders back.

  • Repeat on the other side.
    Modi cations and Other Options

  • If your knees and shins do not stack comfortably, perform easy seated pose
    (page 118).

  • Place a block under the forehead to support the weight of the skull.
