FacetJewelry.com/resource guide),
trace the shape onto a piece of
thin cardboard. Cut out the shape,
trace it onto a 4 x 4-in. (10 x 10 cm)
piece of Ultrasuede, and cut the
Ultrasuede along the template lines.
2) Using E6000, glue the beaded
component f lush to the center top
of the Ultrasuede, and then glue the
three teardrop charms in place so
each one points outward toward a
point on the Ultrasuede (photo r).
3) Glue the 7 mm cabs into the
openings of the links (photo s).
Allow the glue to dry.
4) On 2 yd. (1.8 m) of thread, tie an
overhand knot at the end, and sew
up through the Ultrasuede where
a link component meets the beaded
component. With an alternating
pattern of an A and a B, work a row
of beaded backstitch around the
adjacent link component (photo t).
5) Stitch a color G 4 mm druk at the
junction of the link component and
the beaded component (photo u),
and then outline the outer edge with
a backstitched row of As (photo v).
Add a G outlined with As at the
other junction of this link compo-
nent and the beaded component.
6) Repeat steps 4–5 around the
other two link components.
7) Stitch a color H 4 mm druk at the
tip of each link component, and add
a row of As around it (photo w).
8) With an alternating pattern
of an A and a B, work a row of
beaded backstitch along the edge
of the cup chain between a top link
component and the bottom link
component (photo x). Repeat
along the other side but not along
the top. End your thread.
9) Trim very carefully around the
beadwork, making sure you don’t
cut any threads.
10) Trace the beadwork onto a
piece of cardboard, and cut the
shape out, making it about^1 ⁄ 8 in.
(3 mm) smaller than the beadwork.
Don’t worry about the small areas
where the 4 mms are — they don’t
need the support. Using tacky glue,
adhere the cardboard to the back
of the beadwork (photo y), and
then glue the back of the cardboard
to the remaining Ultrasuede. Allow
the glue to dry. Trim the back layer
of Ultrasuede even with the front.
FINISHING
1) On 2 yd. (1.8 m) of thread, tie an
overhand knot at the end, and sew
up between the layers of Ultrasuede,
burying the knot between the layers
and exiting the front surface right
where the As around a G meet the
side row of As and Bs.
2) Pick up a color E 11 0 seed bead,
a color F 11 0 seed bead, and an E,
sew up through both layers of
Ultrasuede about a bead’s width
away, and sew back through the last
E added (photo z).
3) Pick up an F and an E, sew up
through both layers of Ultrasuede
about a bead’s width away, and
sew back through the last E added
(photo aa). Repeat this stitch along
the edge until you reach the next
link component.
4) Using two As per stitch, work
as in step 3 to add edging around
the link component (photo bb).
5) Work as in steps 3–4 to add
edging all around the piece.
6) To connect the last stitch to the
first stitch, pick up an A, and sew
down through the first E. Sew up
through both layers of Ultrasuede,
and sew back through the first E.
End the thread in the beadwork.
7) On 1 ft. (30 cm) of thread, tie an
overhand knot at the end, and sew
up between the layers of Ultrasuede,
burying the knot between the layers
and exiting the front surface at the
tip of the bottom point (photo cc).
