Remove the floorboard assembly and set aside.
Place the oil pump on a flat surface and hold down
firmly with one hand as you remove the three check
ball retaining screws with a large flathead screwdriver.
Screws 1 and 2 allow direct access to the spring and
check ball. Screw 3 (arrow) allows access to an internal
spring preload screw.
Blow all passages out with compressed air.
Use an 11/16" wrench to loosen the flare nut on the oil
feed line.
Remove the internal spring preload screw (arrow) from
hole 3 with a flathead screwdriver, making sure to count
the number of turns it takes to remove the screw.
Thread 1/2-20" nut on the burnishing tool into hole 1
on the oil pump body using a 9/16" wrench.
Plug the oil feed line with a tapered rubber or silicone
stopper. Remove the three springs and check balls from the
pump body (they should just fall out when the pump is
rotated). Note that hole 3 uses a different size spring
than holes 1 and 2.
Use a 1/2" wrench to turn the middle hex on the
burnishing tool until it lightly contacts the seat inside
the pump body. Now burnish the seat by tightening
the burnishing tool against the seat using light hand
pressure. Loosen and repeat four or five times. Make
sure not to use excessive force as it may cause damage
to the seat or pump body.
Use a 7/16" wrench to remove the three nuts and one
bolt that secure the oil pump to the cam cover.
Soak the pump body in lacquer thinner to remove all
oil and contaminates from the internal passages. Repeat steps 14 and 15 for hole 2.
