First Audition:
“I remember that I was
the only guy [audition-
ing] who didn’t make it to
hair and makeup. I didn’t really
want to run into anybody. I didn’t mind
seeing the actors; I actually like seeing who
my competition is, I think that gives me
strength. But as far as seeing the cast and
crew, I didn’t want the distraction with that,
so I kind of minded my own business and
ran my lines and solidified my choices. I
think there were seven of us auditioning and
I remember they brought us all up to stage,
and we could see and/or hear everybody
else’s audition and I thought, ‘Oh, this is
excellent, because I know it’s going to throw
everybody off!’ I knew it would mess every-
body up. Jeff Parise [ex-Carlos] auditioned
for the role and I remember watching him
really good.’ But
I knew he wasn’t
right for this role
because I knew it
was for Sam’s father.
So when I saw him
set, I wasn’t surprised. I
auditioned with Maurice
Benard [Sonny], who seemed
to give you some direction or they ask you
to stop to see if it messes you up, but that
didn’t bother me. I think they set it up with
potential distractions to see how well you
hold it together because of the pace that
we have these days. I think it’s almost an
audition for your acting, an audition for the
technical aspect, and an audition maybe
for temperament and how well you hold it
together in that environment.”
First Day On Set: “My first scene
was with Maxie, at the magazine. I remem-
ber grabbing her arm; they wanted to set
the tone for Derek Wells [Julian’s alias at
the time] immediately, like, this guy wasn’t
to be messed with. And then Connie came
waltzing in. I don’t remember a lot about the
first day specifically, but I remember my first
day on ALL MY CHILDREN [as Michael
Cambias in 2003] like it was yesterday.”
First On-Screen Rival: “I was
brought in to be an antagonist and adversary
for Sonny, and I think that worked really
well — but I think we all know that an
antagonist for Sonny can’t be there forever,
so I think they decided at some point, ‘Oh,
this is working better than we thought it was
going to work.’ ”
