WALTHER ROTEX RM8 VARMINT

ACTION AND REACTION
On to the action; The Varmint UC is just as the
original RM8, with an 8-shot magazine that
comes in either .177 or .22, and an 11mm
dovetail rail for your scope. There are some
refinements, though – the shorter barrel with a
K3 Neo silencer and the bigger bolt handle.
The rifle feels solid and it has a nice weight to it
at 3.75kgs – or 8.26lbs, depending on how you
weigh things up. The balance feels spot on with
the shortened barrel and K3 Neo silencer, and it
doesn’t feel top-heavy in the standing position.
Loading the 0.22 eight-shot magazine is
straightforward enough with the pellet of
choice, the Hammerli Field Target, and

inserting the magazine is just like all RM8s, by

pulling the bolt back, sliding back the

magazine catch on the right-hand side and

then rolling in the magazine from the left and

pushing forward the catch to lock the

magazine in place. Finally, close the bolt to

push the pellet into the breech.

The head of the bolt is oversize, which I

think is great because you get a really positive

hold to drive the pellet in smoothly, plus in the

winter months, when wearing gloves or

shooting at night, the bolt is ideal.

I made sure I tried the rifle in all positions;

standing, kneeling, prone and finally, off a
