- DUTCH DUO
Kopites are used to seeing a Dutch
defender at centre-half, but with Virgil
van Dijk away on his winter break Neil
Critchley decided to double-up and
field a Dutch duo in central defence.
Ki-Jana Hoever and Sepp van den
Berg, who both turned 18 either side of
Christmas, played alongside each other
at centre-back for the first time in the
senior team and both looked highly
accomplished.
All of Hoever’s previous first-team
appearances had been at right-back,
while Van den Berg had a couple of
tricky nights in his first two starts
against Arsenal and Aston Villa in the
Carabao Cup, but the way both players
are developing was there for all to see.
Shrewsbury didn’t have a single shot
on target and that was in no small part
to the way the Dutch duo dealt with
their strikers.
8. DEBUTANTS
Five youngsters made their Liverpool debuts against
Shrewsbury Town. Adam Lewis started at left-back, Jake Cain
played in central midfield and Liam Millar led the line up front
for 82 minutes until fellow-debutant Joe Hardy came on to
replace him.
There was also a stoppage-time debut for midfielder Elijah-
Dixon Bonner and an Anfield debut from the bench for Morgan
Boyes.
Twenty-year-old Millar, who was born in Toronto, made
history by becoming the first Canadian to play for LFC while
Leighton Clarkson made his first start for the Reds having made
his debut at Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup.
It was a night none of them will ever forget.
