Oil Demonstration 59

STAGE 1
LAYING THE FOUNDATION
Back in the studio I begin by painting in some
base colours and shapes to lay the foundations
for the painting. As well as establishing the
composition, I’m also thinking about setting the
mood and atmosphere.

STAGE 2
THE SKY
Next, I paint in the sky simply because it is the
most distant area in the painting, and therefore
works well if you paint this first and then build-up
the layers of the landscape. Using fingers to apply
paint is an excellent way of achieving some of the
shapes and textures you find in clouds.

STAGE 3
EXPRESSIVE MARKS
Now I can start to lay down some bold expressive marks and textures
with a palette knife and sculpt the mountains with paint. I take
great care to mix the colours correctly for different sections of the
mountainsides. It is the changes in colour and tone that will help to
create the feeling of depth and distance.
