SIDDHA


The Siddha system of medicine is said to have originated in
Tamil Nadu. The 5 1/2 years’ course leads to a Bachelor of
Siddha Medicine and Surgery (BSMS). Siddha focuses on
seven elements of the human body which control the psycho-
logical and physiological functions. These include plasma,
blood, muscle, fat, bone, nerve and semen. These elements
are regulated by three components -- air, fire or heat energy
and water. Siddha system is oriented towards keeping these
elements in balance.
BSMS course starts with History and Fundamental Prin-
ciples of Siddha Medicine, Bio-Chemistry, Microbiology,
Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Forensic Medicine and
Toxicology before moving on to Surgery, including Dentistry
and Dermatology. The course also includes basic Tamil and
Communicative English.
BSMS graduates can practise as Siddha Doctors in Govern-
ment Hospitals and Primary Health centers. They are more
centric to the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Postgraduate
courses can be in General Medicine, Pharmacology, Special
Medicine, Paediatrics, Pathology and Toxicology and Medi-
cal Jurisprudence.

UNANI
Kamil-e-Tib-o-Jarahat or the Bachelor in Unani Medicine
and Surgery (BUMS) is based on the teachings of Greek
physicians  Hippocrates and Galen. It allows a student to
specialize in Unani, a Perso-Arabic form of alternative medi-
cine that was widely practiced in Mughal era. The duration
of the course is 4 1/2 years followed by 1-year of compulsory
rotatory internship.
The course is generally taught in Urdu and English and can
be pursued full-time or through distance education as well.
The course comprises Arabic and Basic Principles of Unani
Medicine, Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology & Bed side clinic,
Social and Preventive Medicine, Ophthalmology & ENT and
Gynaecology, Obstetrics and Paediatrics.
Graduates can practise as Unani Hakims. Specializations
are offered in about 14 disciplines as part of MD or MS.
