Pub puts up
festive tree
in heatwave
A PUB has put up its
Christmas tree – on the
hottest day of the year.
Drinkers in the Air
Balloon were yesterday
greeted by the 5ft artificial
tree, adorned with gold,
blue and silver baubles.
As Britain baked in
highs of 33.6C, the
untimely display carried a
sign saying: “Have yourself
a merry little Christmas.”
It is the third year in a
row the pub, in Filton, near
Bristol, has put up its
Christmas tree in July.
Manager Joanne
Johnson said it puts a
smile on drinkers’ faces
and encourages early
Christmas bookings.
She said: “It’s a talking
point. We’ve already had
a few bookings for
Christmas parties and
lunch as a result. It’s where
the idea comes from.”

SIR Paul McCartney has
hinted at plans to compile
an album made up of
improvised tunes from
his soundchecks.
The ex-Beatle said
modern recording meant
he had a “treasure trove” of
musical moments that
would previously have
come and gone in a flash.
Sir Paul, 77, was asked

com, if he still improvises
at soundchecks.
He said: “Yeah! There’s a
guy in our team who logs
them. And he tells me
we’ve got thousands.
“Because they’re impro-
vised, they’re instant and
then they’re gone. Thank-
fully, our stuff is captured
as these days you can
record just about anything.
“It’s a treasure trove. One
day we will have to put
together an album.”

TEACHER Richard Thoday is riding high as he enters
the final stages of his bid to be the fastest person on a

Richard, 56, of Matlock, Derbys, crossed the Forth

850-mile trek. He hopes to beat the 1886 record of just
over five days set by Lt Col George Pilkington Mills.
