Then I created a center star design using the same half-square triangles and
an on-point square. Once the block was sewn, I added plain fabric borders
in different widths to create a more contemporary style, combined with 17
sawteeth and 3 small, individual paws for interest. I then strategically placed
and appliquéd 15 squares on-point to add a little detail. My color and fabric
choices reflected the quiet style I was after by keeping the value contrast
lower than I usually use. I also chose fabric prints that were, for the most
part, in character with my plan.

Fabric Requirements
The yardage is the total for each
color family. An assortment of dif-
ferent values and visual textures for
each color is the key to success.

Double Paw block

For the 8 Double Paw blocks and
the center star unit, you will need a
total of 48 A’s and 48 B’s. They are
created exactly the same, but then
the A’s are custom cut to 1 ̋ and
the B’s are custom cut to 11/4 ̋. To
make the 8 Double Paws, arrange
the appropriate A’s and B’s with
the C-D-E squares and assemble as
illustrated. You should have 16 A’s
and 16 B’s left over for the center
star unit. Cutting instructions for
the A’s and B’s indicates the total
amount; you must make individual
quantity determinations based on
your fabric and color choices.
