The yellow
of native
goldenrods
may be the
most notice-
able of fall
flowers,
says Dave
DeGraaf,
president of
the Calhoun
County
Master
Gardener
Association.
“From showy to stiff to swamp,
goldenrod blooms blanket the land-
scape in the fall,” said Ellen Holste,
who will present a program titled
“The Golden Rules of Goldenrods” to
the group on Tuesday,
Nov. 5, at 6:30 p.m. at the
Horticulture Training Center at Leila

Arboretum, 103 Limit St., in Battle
Creek.
Attendees will “learn the differ-
ences between goldenrod plants in
Michigan, their identifying character-
istics, and their importance to insects,
animals and humans,” according to
Holste.
She serves at Pierce Cedar Creek
Institute in Hastings as the Research
and Community
Engagement manager, overseeing
the institute’s field station.
She holds dual Ph.D.s from
Michigan State University in forestry
and ecology
and is certified as an interpre-
tive guide and trainer through
the National Association for
Interpretation.
The meeting is open to guests for a
small fee.
