Between 705 and 707, Emperor Chung-tsung recognized a king of
Samarkand (T’ang hui-yao 99:18b).
In the 6th month (July) of 707, envoys from Samarkand presented
regional objects (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5026).
In the 3rd month (Apr./May) of 717, envoys from Samarkand
presented textiles and indigo (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5027).
In 718, envoys from Samarkand offered a pygmy, barbarian (hu)
twirling girls, a leopard, dogs, chain armour, a rock crystal bowl, a
carnelian pitcher, ostrich eggs, and yüeh-no cloth (Chiu T’ang shu 198:
14a;Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5027; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 338:47b).
In the 2nd (Feb./Mar.) month of 719, the kings of Samarkand and
Bukhara informed the T’ang court that they had been under attack by
the Arabs (Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.6735). In the 6th month (June/July),
envoys from Samarkand offered gifts (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5027).
In the 4th month (Apr./May) of 724, envoys of the king of Samar-
kand presented one pygmy, two horses, and two dogs (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei
p.5028).
In the 11th month (Nov./Dec.) of 726, envoys from the king of
Samarkand presented a leopard and regional objects (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei
p.5028).
In the 5th month (May/June) of 727, Samarkand presented barbar-
ian (hu) twirling girls and a leopard (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5028).
In 731, the king of Samarkand requested recognition of one of his
sons as king of Kabådh§n and of another as king of M§imargh.^15
Emperor Hsüan-tsung complied (Chiu T’ang shu 198:14a-14b; Wen-
hsien t’ung-k’ao 338:47b).
In 739, it became known at the T’ang court that the king of Samar-
kand had died. Hsüan-tsung recognized his successor (Chiu T’ang shu
198:14b).
In the 10th month (Oct./Nov.) of 740, envoys from Samarkand
presented a precious censer, white jade rings, carnelian, and rock
crystal (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5029).
In the 12th month (Dec./Jan., 744) of the Chinese year 743, a chief
from Samarkand presented objects (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5030).
In the 7th month (Aug./Sep.) of 744, envoys from Samarkand
presented horses and valuables. Hsüan-tsung conferred on the king
