On Feb.4, 615, the New Year’s Day, Emperor Yang of Sui gave a
great banquet for envoys from Tokharia and other states (Sui shu 4:
9b; 83:12b; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 339:55b).
In the 5th month (June/July) of 635, envoys from Tokharia to the
T’ang court offered regional objects (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5024).
In 639, envoys from Tokharia offered gifts (Chiu T’ang shu 3:6b).
On Feb.2, 645, the New Year’s Day, envoys from a high Tokharian
official congratulated at the T’ang court and offered regional objects
(Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5024).
In 647, envoys from Tokharia offered gifts (Chiu T’ang shu 3:11a).
On Jan.30, 648, the New Year’s Day, envoys from Tokharia to the
T’ang court offered gifts (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5025).
In the 5th month (June/July) of 650, envoys from Tokharia pre-
sented a black ostrich. The texts describe it as follows: it was 7 feet
high, had feet resembling those of a camel, could run 300 Chinese
miles (li) a day, ate bronze and iron, and was commonly called a camel
bird. Emperor Kao-tsung sent it to be kept at the tomb of his father,
T’ai-tsung (Chiu T’ang shu 4:2b; T’ung-tien 193:22a; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao
339:55b).
In 652, the king of Tokharia announced his enthronment to the
T’ang court. Emperor Kao-tsung reponded with an envoy of his own
(T’ang hui-yao 99:16a).
In the 4th month (Apr./May) of 654, envoys from Tokharia, led
by a son of the king, offered gifts (T’ang hui-yao 99:16a; Ts’e-fu yüan-
kuei p.5025).
On Jan.20, 657, the New Year’s Day, Tokharia presented a lion
(Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5025).
On July 21, 661, Emperor Kao-tsung established out of Tokharia,
Ya-ta, Kapiáa, Persia, and other states eight imaginary Area Com-
mands, divided into 76 commanderies, 110 prefectures, and 126
army headquarters, all theoretically under the An-hsi protectorate
in Kucha. The king of Tokharia was appointed Military Governor
of the Yüeh-chih Area Command^26 (T’ang hui-yao 99:16b; Tzu-chih
t’ung-chien pp.6324-6325).
In 665, a younger brother of the king of Tokharia presented carne-
