On Apr.14, 1173, Southern Sung envoys to the Chin court con-
gratulated on the birthday of Shih-tsung. They had received their
orders on Jan.8 (Sung shih 34:16b; Chin shih 7:4a).
On Nov.27, 1173, the Vice Inspector-general of the Left and other
Chin envoys arrived at the Southern Sung court to congratulate on the
birthday of Hsiao-tsung.^40 They had received their orders on Oct.4.
On Dec.4, they entered the palace and discussed the protocol for
receiving communications (Sung shih 34:18a; Chin shih 7:5a).
On Feb.4, 1174, the New Year’s Day, Southern Sung envoys
congratulated at the Chin court. They had received their orders on
Nov.11, 1173. On the same day, Chin envoys congratulated at the
Southern Sung court. They had arrived on Jan.31. On his return,
the chief Jurchen envoy was on Mar.9 sentenced for a crime he had
committed during his mission. He was given a bastinado of more than
150 lashes, and the presents he had received were confiscated (Sung
shih 34:18a-18b; Chin shih 7:5b, 6a).
On Mar.13, 1174, Shih-tsung appointed a Master of Writing of
the Ministry of Punishments and other envoys to conduct discussions
with Southern Sung. They were received at the Southern Sung court
on Apr.29 (Sung shih 34:19a; Chin shih 7:6a).
On Apr.4, 1174, Southern Sung envoys to the Chin court congratu-
lated on the birthday of Shih-tsung. They had received their orders
in the 12th month (Jan./Feb., 1174) of the Chinese year 1173 (Sung
shih 34:18b; Chin shih 7:6a).
On Oct.22, 1174, a Southern Sung goodwill mission was received
at the Chin court (Chin shih 7:7a).
On Nov.17, 1174, a Master of Writing of the Ministry of Punish-
ments and other Chin envoys arrived at the Southern Sung court to
congratulate on the birthday of Hsiao-tsung.^41 They had received their
orders on Oct.8 (Sung shih 34:20a; Chin shih 7:7a).
On Jan.25, 1175, the New Year’s Day, Southern Sung envoys con-
gratulated at the Chin court. They had received their orders on Nov.4,
- On the same day, a Palace Assistant Secretary and other Chin
envoys congratulated at the Southern Sung court. They had received
their orders on Dec.8, 1174 (Sung shih 34:20a, 20b; Chin shih 7:7b).^42
