soldiers;theyhadtofind

pre-modern
Islamicate
government
which
depended largelyonmarginal
areasoldiers--andthis
included
nearlyeveryone--hadtoseekoutalternatesourcesof
manpower
withintwo
(orso)generations
ofitsestablishmentandthencontinuetodosountil
thetimeofitsdemise.
The recruitmentof
marginalareasoldiers
completedtheirhold overIslamicatearmies.
They
both
broughtdynastiestopower
andstaffedthearmiesthereafter.Asthe
foundingsol-diersbecameunreliable,the
governmentimported
new
margi-nal areasoldierstoreplacethem. Thus,
unreliability
didnotsignal
theexitof
marginalarea
soldiersbutonlychangedthecast.Afterthefirst
spasm
of
conquest,importationmightgoonfor
generations.
