preventedthem;thefactthatthey
didnot
pointstotheir
relinquishmentof
power,whichthenmade rule
byoutsiders
possible.Adherence totheideals ofIslamdidnotcauseanabundanceofoutsidersin
authoritybutadearthofinsiderswhowishedtoassumeit.TheBenefitsofMilitarySlavery

marginalareastoreplenishhisarmedforces,hehadthreemeans
throughwhichto
acquirethem: alliance,
pay,orenslavement.Each ofthesemethodshadits
advantagesanddrawbacks,

twocrucial
respects,rulers
preferredslavestoeithermer-cenaries oralliesbecause
they
were
acquiredmore
easilyand
more
