DRIVE 3: The Baltic Coast

PLAN YOUR DRIVE

Start/finish: Bad Doberan to Usedom.

Number of days: 5–6 days, allowing

one day to explore Rügen.

Distance: 283 miles (456 km).

Road conditions: There are excellent

single-lane and dual-lane B-roads,

except on Rügen, which has some

short cobbled stretches.

When to go: The best time to visit for

a beach holiday is between June and

early September, though Rügen and

Usedom can get busy between July

and August. Christmas and New Year

is the high season for visitors.

Opening times: Most shops are open

from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Other attractions can be visited from

9am to 5pm, Tuesday to Sunday; they

are generally closed on Mondays.

Stralsund: Tue & Fri; Greifswald: Tue –Fri.

DAY TRIP OPTIONS

Culture lovers can stay in Bad Doberan

to visit the graceful Münster. Nature

enthusiasts can drive to Rostock and its

beach resort, Warnemünde, a chic art

village and a bird-watcher’s treat.

Families may prefer historic Stralsund,

with its fine beaches, and a drive to the

island of Rügen and the charming town
