Annex E - Equipment specification

The following equipment specifications describe an example setup for ECDIS
training; other systems may be equally acceptable provided the system can provide
equal functionality. Provided there is sufficient equipment and an acceptable lay-out
the ‘ECDIS mini ship simulator’ may be used for all relevant exercises in the course.
A full bridge simulator may be used for the final passage plan exercises, however,
the trainees will be required to undertake the sole watch keeping duties.

Equipment specification for ECDIS classroom training

This equipment is for ECDIS workstation classroom training to allow demonstration
and practice of ECDIS functionalities. The number of workstations required will
depend on the number of trainees on the course and the time needed to complete
the required exercises. There should be a sufficient number of work stations for each
trainee to be able to adequately interact with the equipment to achieve the learning
outcomes.

Trainee workstation

To include:

i) workstation with dual 19” display with compatible operating system and VGA
card sufficient to run ECDIS software and required electronic chart data;

ii) workstation to be integrated into the server network with navigational and ship
control functionality to allow workstations to interact with other trainees and
the instructor workstations;

iii) the ECDIS display is to be provided on one monitor;

iv) another monitor to provide information on ship controls, navigational
instruments and radar. This could either be on a split screen or menu
selection or both. For added realism the system may also show visual scenes
if split screen functionality is provided;

v) the ECDIS display must be able to show both radar and AIS data along with
the chart data.

Instructor workstation

To include:

i) single workstation with either dual 19” LCD or single larger display of at least
21” with split screen capability;

ii) workstation with simulator instructor control and monitoring software able to
design, execute and playback exercises.

Provided the hardware has sufficient capability the instructor’s workstation and
server/network may be contained in one unit.
