How to Make Your Car Last Forever: Avoid Expensive Repairs, Improve Fuel Economy, Understand Your Warranty, Save Money

Tom,

Q I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am. The gas gauge registers one-quarter

when the tank is empty. When I fill it up, the gauge goes to the full position,
but still registers one-quarter when the tank is emptied. This is frustrating
because I run out of gas, thinking I still have a quarter of a tank of gas! What
could be wrong?

Ed,

A Get the car into a shop and check the fuel tank sending unit and the

wiring to the sending unit. The problem could be due to a bad power or
ground connection or a bad rheostat within the tank unit. If the sending unit
and wiring are found to be good, then check the wiring to the gauge and the
gauge itself. Good luck mate.
