Tom,

Q I own a 1997 Mercury Sable GS 3.0 liter. The parking lights and

dashboard lights are not working at all. I was driving down the road and the
lights just went out. All the warning lights still work, as well as the
headlights and signals; however, the headlights will not turn off by the
headlight switch. They will only turn off when I use my keyless entry
control. Can you please tell me what fuse or relay switch needs to be
replaced? Or could it be caused by something else? I tried checking the fuses;
however, the box was not marked. If I have to pay to have it fixed, how much
should I expect to pay?

Roger,

A It sounds like you may have two separate problems going on at the same

time:

  1. The problem with the parking lights and dash lights is most likely
the fuse. They share the same fuse. It is located in the fuse block below the
headlamp switch. You will have to use your owner’s manual to determine the
fuse location within the fuse block. Unfortunately, Ford does not label the
fuse box itself (Ford usually uses a number system). The owner’s manual
outlines what number fuse protects which circuit.

  2. The problem with the headlamps not responding to the headlamp
switch could be related to a part called the headlamp module or GEM
(generic electronic module). To diagnose a problem relating to your
headlamps, you can expect to pay anywhere from $45 to $75 (depending on
the shop rate in your area). Based on the findings, you may incur additional
charges for parts or wire and materials.

Unless you have automotive electronic experience and proper wiring
diagrams, the problem you are experiencing with the headlamps is one that
you will want a professional to track down and repair. I wish you success.
