Sensory overload
Mike expanded his travel portfolio on a recent family holiday
hon Buri was par
for the course as
me and my family
explored Bangkok
on a two week trip
around Thailand.
Our trip just happened
to coincide with the 65th
birthday of Thailand’s king,
Maha Vajiralongkorn
Bodindradebayavarangkun.
Massive billboards of his
likeness lined the highways
and appeared emblazoned on
buildings. It also coincided
with my daughter’s 18th
birthday and my wife’s 50th,
but they didn’t get billboards.
What we did get was a daily
onslaught of vibrant sights,
sounds and smells. It was a
complete sensory overload in
the very best way.
I tapped out three hours
into our private food tour
along the streets and canals of
Thon Buri on the west bank of
Bangkok’s Chao Phraya river.
I’m pretty sure it was the bag
RIÀVKEDOOVWKDWSXVKHGPHWR
my culinary capacity, but then
again it could have been the
spicy Papaya salad I had
overindulged in.
I love photography as much
as I love food, so of course I
had my camera with me! A
Canon EOS 5D Mark III paired
with my 28-70mm to take
street stills. This granted me
WKHÁH[LELOLW\WRVKRRWZLGH
and to zoom in and take
pictures from afar if needed,
to remain incognito and get
candid pictures of people
going about their daily lives.
It has a fast max aperture of
f/2.8, which was essential
when shooting in the dark and
dingy markets. This meant I
could get a fast enough shutter
speed for a sharp picture
without ramping up the ISO
and damaging the quality.
