January 1999: Tellme Networks, Inc., founded
by Mike McCue, former vice president of
technology at Netscape, and Angus Davis,
former communicator product manager at
Netscape. McCue brings on Hadi Partovi, former
group program manager for Microsoft’s Internet
Explorer, as part of Tellme’s founding
management team.
July 1999: James Barksdale, former CEO of
Netscape, and Brad Silverberg, former senior
vice president and member of Microsoft’s
executive committee, along with Tellme’s
employees, invest $6 million in Tellme. Silverberg
and Peter Currie, former executive vice president
and CFO of Netscape and a partner at The
Barksdale Group, join the company’s board of
directors.
December 1999: Tellme raises $47 million from
leading venture capital firms Benchmark Capital
and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Seed-
round investors, The Barksdale Group and Brad
Silverberg also participate in this round of
financing. Kevin Harvey, a founding partner at
Benchmark, joins the company’s board of
directors.

April 2000: Tellme begins nationwide trial of its
free voice portal service. Users can call a toll-
free number and access news, weather
forecasts, sports scores, stock quotes, traffic
reports, horoscopes, and movie and restaurant
listings using voice commands.
May 2000: AT&T invests $60 million in Tellme
as part of a strategic relationship in which Tellme
will use AT&T networking services and
collaborate with AT&T to develop business and
consumer applications based on Tellme’s Internet
platform and delivered over AT&T’s network.
July 2000: Tellme officially launches 1-800-555-
TELL, ending a three-month trial in which the
company completed 1.6 million calls and brought
its voice-recognition accuracy to an average of
95 percent.
October 2000: Tellme raises an additional $125
million in financing from institutional investors,
Attractor, Amerindo Investment Advisors,
Bowman Capital, Essex Investment
Management, Ignition, Van Wagoner, and others
including original investors Benchmark Capital,
Kleiner Perkins, and The Barksdale Group.
