Table A2.5a Permissible stresses for steel compressive elements (after BS 449)

Intermediate values may be obtained by linear interpolation.

NOTE. For material over 40 mm thick, other than rolled I-beams or channels, and for universal columns of thicknesse:
exceeding 40 mm, the limiting stress is 140 N/mm^2.

3 The permissible compressive stress is
obtained from Table A2.5, based on the
highest of the slenderness ratio value calcu
lated in 2.

4 The actual compressive stress which will
occur is calculated from the applied load

and the area of the trial cross-section (given
in the Steel Section Tables) and compared
with the permissible value. The actual value
should be equal to or slightly less than the
permissible stress. If it is not, a new trial
section is selected and the above sequence
260 repeated.
