A2.4.4 Triangulated elements
Triangulated girders and trusses can have a
variety of overall forms. The most commonly
used are the pitched truss and the parallel
chord truss. Pitched trusses normally have a
pitch angle of between 30° and 45°. This deter-
mines their overall depth. The depth of parallel

chord trusses in relation to their span can vary
widely. Principal structural elements which
carry substantial areas of floor or roof normally
have span/depth ratios in the range 12 to 14.
Lightweight triangulated steel joists are much
less deep with span/depth ratios in the range
20 to 30. 261
