Today, we still have a “Yellow Pages” concept, but we call it Internet.
When you stop to think about it, the Internet is just the Yellow Pages
on hyper-steroids. The concept is basically the same, but the Internet is
much more cost effective, much broader in its reach, and has a poten-
tial return on investment (ROI) that could never be reached a couple of
short decades ago. Just as business owners in the 1980’s depended on
the Yellow Pages and other print media to market their product or ser-
vice, today’s business owner depends on the Internet to serve the same
function.


Let’s face it, in today’s marketing world, if you don’t have a marketing-
oriented website, you won’t be doing much business. A marketing web-
site is your opportunity as a business owner to take control of your web
presence and the opportunity to sell your product or services to those
that are in the market to buy. Why do you need a marketing website?
Probably the most obvious answer is that marketing drives sales, sales
drives revenue, and revenue drives profit. I think we can all agree that
is the reason we are in business, to make a profit. But, let’s dive a bit
deeper into why you need a top-notch marketing-oriented website.


YoU neeD to Be vIsIBle

I recently heard about a business owner, a man in his late sixties, who
did an outstanding business during the original “Yellow Pages” days.
However, today his business is being run over by other businesses in
his market sector even though his business has been around the longest.


His problem is not that his product and service is inferior, in fact, all of
his customers have loved him and were very pleased with his product
and the installation service he provided. His problem is that he refused
to succumb to the Internet monster. He never took time to understand
the Internet and refused to hire someone to help him. As a result, his
sales began dropping year after year. His business is now perceived by
others as non-existent because they can’t find his business when search-
ing the Internet.


While an anti-Internet attitude may be quite rare and at the extreme end
of the spectrum, there are many business owners today that don’t real-
ize why they need to have a marketing- oriented web presence or their
marketing website is quite weak. They may have a website, but they
don’t maximize search engine optimization (SEO) and, as a result, they
