a real leader, you need to take action, to decide, make opinions,
to go ahead under the real conditions, to be the best all the time,
to bring out the best in all others, and to show the people what
you are made of. In some instances, you will need to deliver un-
der the most difficult circumstances, and this is what will make
you a complete and a true leader.
Other qualities and skills are needed in a leader; he or she needs to be
honest, intelligent, inspiring, courageous, and straightforward.
Many years ago, I was posed with the usual question about leader-
ship: Are leaders born or made? After carefully thinking I answered,
“I believe that leaders are developed.” I strongly believe that leaders
are nourished from within, grow and develop; a really true leader is
an expert in changing circumstances and adapts to a turbulent and an
uncertain reality. Some will be born with the necessary skills to be-
come a leader, but you need to develop them to become a leader. You
do not appoint a person to become a leader; it does not work that way.
It is the people that will follow him or her who will decide who their
leader will be, not the other way around. You have to demonstrate your
values, beliefs and your true spirit. In this sense, people who are born
with talents and skills need to prepare and be ready for the moment of
truth, to become recognized by what they do, and thus will become the
real leaders, anticipating the opportunities that arise. Leaders will show
us a better way, or how we can attain a better life, and start to solve the
issues and problems that we face daily, arising stronger under uncertain
and turbulent times.
It is very easy to read about what I have just explained and not grasp
the reality of what it means. In a sense I cannot express in just a few
words what people have to do in order to live in a world where you are
continuously faced with changing rules, or your dream of a free society,
or that to be in a true democracy you even need to fight when all goes
against you. But in that part of the world, people live most days without
electricity, water or public services, do not have social welfare, quit
school at early ages since they need to go out to work for food, do not
