have new laws or changed ones every few months, which change the
way businesses are run, and the way people and societies perform. It is
not easy; be clear on that. In my opinion, it has been these harsh and dif-
ficult experiences in our lives that have shown the better qualities on a
handful of people in our towns, cities, and countries. These experiences
mold, define, and create your character, your personality and my belief
is that it is under these circumstances that the true leader arises, that the
true person transforms himself into a real leader.
Leadership is an art in itself. Leading others is gained by respect, by
the trust you transmit, the integrity you show, and the way you decide to
assist all others. Leadership for me is the pursuit of excellence. You
become a leader, being worthy of the friendship and trust of the people
that follow you. Latin America and other regions of the world are in need
of excellent, well-prepared and dedicated people; the leaders who live
in these regions will require integrity, dedication, trust, values, personal
commitment, strength, endurance, excellence and even survival skills.
People come and go; leaders are recognized forever. People look
for guidance, leaders look for initiatives; people look for someone to
follow and a true leader will assume the responsibility of doing so.
Many changes and particular situations over the years have taken their
tolls in our societies, in our economic and political development; but
leaders always come out and shine while looking for and learning new
ways of making things better. A leader will be there, no matter what
the situation is, or what the challenges are. A true leader will gain the
respect he deserves just by the way he behaves and acts, and will come
out stronger, with more desire and more willingness to lead.
Leaders might be born every day, but it takes time for them to grow
and develop, and it will be our responsibility, our duty, to call upon
these regular day-to-day people to become the leaders of our uncertain
future. These will be the leaders who will help change our future, that
will hopefully change the uncertainty into certainty, who will change a
crisis situation into a growing and developing opportunity. They will
be the ones who will lead the way for so many people in the uncertain
world, so that we will all see a brighter future, simply because they are
the leaders of our times.
