Joseph Smith Biography

(Grace) #1
Thirty-Nine (1844)

Compassionately, we are spared the remembrance of our prior mortal lives so that we can bear
the burdens of the present and learn the most we can from our current incarnation.
The order and laws of the Universe are perfect—they always have been and they
always will be—worlds without end. These laws prohibit the creation of a human being
unless the creator of such guarantees the security and happiness of the newly created
human. To ensure that the new person experiences happiness as a human, its creators give it
unconditional free will to exist as they do, choosing its own, uniquely individual, course of
happiness based on this free will. These creators are under a universal mandate to provide
an Overseer—a Christ—who will ensure and guarantee the happiness of their creations—
their children, their eternal equals.
The newly created humans grew up in the presence of their creators/parents and
learned the basic code of humanity from their example and experience. They were taught that
they must subject their free will to the same constraints and restrictions outlined in the eternal
laws of the Universe to which their creators are subjected. They were provided with an
Overseer who was created by their creators/parents specifically and exclusively to become
the one to whom all of their children would submit their free will—a righteous dictator.
The problem was the children were created with unconditional free will. The
newly created humans had the free will to reject their parents’ Overseer and not submit
to his authority. However, this order of the Universe was the law and could not be
broken. If, by free will, a human decided not to submit to the authority of an Overseer,
then that human could no longer be allowed to exist in the Universe.^10 This is because
of the potential of disrupting the continuity of its peace and order, especially among
other human beings.
To help their children make the choice to submit to an Overseer, without impeding
their free will to do so, our creators wanted us to experience an existence where the laws of
the Universe were replaced with whatever laws we thought were best for us, according to
our free-willed choices. They knew all along that we would stumble. They expected us to
stumble so that we would learn from experience that we must submit freely to our anointed
Overseer. They placed us upon this earth so that we would stumble and learn.^11

Reconciling Ourselves to the Laws of the Universe

As mortals, we will wisely come to this conclusion:

Behold, great and marvelous are the works of the Lord. How unsearchable
are the depths of the mysteries of him; and it is impossible that man should
find out all his ways. And no man knoweth of his ways save it be revealed
unto him; wherefore, brethren, despise not the revelations of God.

For behold by the power of his word man came upon the face of the earth,
which earth was created by the power of his word. Wherefore, if God being
able to speak and the world was, and to speak and man was created, O then,
why not be able to command the earth, or the workmanship of his hands
upon the face of it, according to his will and pleasure?
