12: DESIGN NORTHCOTE HOUSE
LOCATION NORTHCOTE, VICTORIA
This family needed more space for a growing
family of six, so their two-bedroom Edwardian
cottage got a modern makeover that off ered
the opportunity for individuals to fi nd solitude,
while also isolating children’s activities from the
adults. By extending the building’s footprint to
the boundary lines of the existing long narrow
block, the architects were able to create space
at the beck and call of the inhabitants. A light-
fi lled living room fl ows directly to the outdoor
courtyard — a warm and inviting room where
the family can gather together. Smaller pockets
of space, like a window nook, off er areas for
peaceful contemplation. The downstairs section
can also be divided in two by a set of sliding
doors, allowing the living room to be separated
from the kitchen/dining space as needed.

13: DESIGN CATALINA HOUSE
LOCATION AVALON BEACH, NEW SOUTH WALES
After emigrating from the UK, Beau and Nikki
Quarry wanted to keep their family in the
leafy beachside suburb of Avalon on Sydney’s

Northern Beaches — they simply needed more
room. Expanded to accommodate a family of
fi ve, the former single-bedroom bungalow on
the site got a new fl oorplan that would establish
fl ow throughout the home and develop larger
living spaces. A series of new linear areas move
from living, dining and kitchen to the deck
and garden. “The enlarged home provides the
desired range of spaces for a family of fi ve,
from open-plan communal living areas to more
private spaces such as the master bedroom and

terrace, off ering solitude when desired,” says
Drew Hamilton, director of pH+ Architects. In
the dining space, double-size sliding glass doors
can be drawn back into the adjacent walls to
open the area up to the elements, blurring the
lines between internal and external space and
making the most of what the site has to off er.
