12 Cut a building from the town
template and place on top of
your marbled paste. Carefully cut
around the shape using a craft
knife. Leave the shape on your
work surface for a moment or
two, to prevent the shape being
distorted when lifted.

13 Paint sugar glue over the relevant
section of the scribed cake and attach
the cut out building in place. Ensure
the shape fits exactly within the
scribed lines. Use a set square to help
you. Repeat this process for other
buildings of the same colour referring
to the main cake to guide you.

14 Change the colours that you
are using, again make a random
pile on your work board, before
gathering them together and
roughly kneading. Note that in this
example I have included white to
add a lightness to the mix.

15 Roll out paste, if you are not
happy with the resulting pattern,
you can change it by adding more
paste underneath the pattern and
re-rolling to open up and spread
the colours.

16 Cut another section from your
template and use to make another
paste building. Try not to cut the
master template so it falls apart and
you become confused as to which
piece is which. Either work from
the bottom and top, as I did, or try
numbering the pieces.

17 Attach the shape to your
cake using sugar glue and the
scribed design to aid placement.
Remember you are adding pieces
of a sugar jigsaw.

18 Remember to always check that
your buildings have straight edges,
using a set square, and that they fit
the scribed pattern. This ensures that
your pieces will fit snugly together.

19 Continue changing colours and
adding buildings until you have
completed the background design.
The order you add the buildings is
up to you, as are the colours.

20 To add the castellations,
roll out some marbled paste using
appropriate colours, cut a strip of
your desired height or about 1cm.
Then cut the strip into squares.

22 Roll out the burgundy modelling
paste between the 1mm spacers.
Using cutters from the simple
arabesque tile set cut out domed
roofs. Cut the shapes to size, by
using the building templates as
shown. Attach in place.

21 Using sugar glue, attach the
castellations in place along the
top edges of the appropriate
buildings, taking care to space the
squares evenly.

23 Repeat for the buildings with the
blue domed roofs. Note that the
size of the buildings will determine
which cutter to use and how much
paste to remove from the shape. If
you are uncertain simply experiment
to see which you prefer. ➜
